If you live near Barnegat Bay, or work or play in, on, or around it, you are probably aware of the fact that it is in trouble.  Never ending algae blooms, stinging nettles, the loss of submerged aquatic vegetation, to name a few of the issues.  Many of these issues are caused by various kinds of pollution, and other human-related problems.  In my lifetime alone (39 years), a lot has changed – the bay is more crowded, the water is more murky, and there are fewer fish and crabs to catch!Save Barnegat Bay and other organizations are sponsoring a petition to have the bay declared impaired under a provision of the federal Clean Water Act.

“Barnegat Bay is sick and dying. We all want and need a healthy, fishable and swimmable Bay which in turn supports a healthy economy.

A full effort to restore Barnegat Bay can be achieved only if government acknowledges what people and scientists already know and then employs our most powerful tools.” – American Littoral Society, Clean Ocean Action, Pinelands Preservation Alliance, Save Barnegat Bay
